Kurt Schoor Memorial Fund

When Kurt Schoor died unexpectedly of heart trouble at age 32, his best friend from Parkway Central High School wanted to do something to honor his memory. “I was hurting,” says Jeff Altman, who graduated with Kurt in 1979, so I called up the Parkway Alumni Association, and together we came up with the idea of starting the Kurt Schoor Memorial Fund.”  It was the Association’s first memorial fund, and Jeff says raising money in Kurt’s honor helped him heal after losing Kurt, a talented high school athlete and football player.

“Kurt was the brother I never had,” says Jeff. “He had this infectious smile and energy. We were inseparable. People called us, ‘Mutt and Jeff.’” Their bond lasted through college, marriage and the start of their respective families. They were each other’s best men, and both named their male children after each other. The bond lasts today as Jeff watches money from the Kurt Schoor Memorial Fund go to current Parkway students to pursue their academic dreams through the Granting Dreams program.
